#96 Clear explanation of Kiawase - 気合わせの解釈

Please try the following experiment at home first.

When someone else tickles your armpits, it is very ticklish and you can't stand it. But when you tickle yourself, you don't feel anything. Now, put your hand on top of someone else's hand. Then you don't feel ticklish when you are tickled. This is because your brain misidentifies that you are doing yourself by placing your own hand on top of someone else's.

Ki-awase is essentially a technique that uses this misidentification of the brain. You sense the direction of the opponent's kinetic energy flow, and gently and softly overlap your own kinetic energy in that direction.

The two kinetic energies overlap and the movement accelerates, but the opponent's brain mistakenly recognises this as being caused by his own movement and his reaction is delayed. At that moment, the opponent is off balance and you can initiate the technique. The trick is to overlap the energies softly and guide them without pushing or pulling by force.

Aikido is first practised by reading the direction of kinetic energy and connecting the flow. Experienced students who are able to do this naturally then practise connecting the flow by guiding the direction of the opponent's consciousness. In this way, the movements become simpler and simpler. This technique is called Ki-awase.

If the quick flow is resisted, its huge kinetic energy is focused on the joints, which can cause injury. So it is important for Uke to accept the flow when he or she feels it is being led.

Of course, Nage also respects the training partner, your Uke, and ensures safety while performing the technique. The way the safety is ensured is a measure of the skill of Nage. Good Uke and good Nage are such things.

Aikido has no rules. That is why it is a fundamental premise that you must trust your training partners, and you cannot practise with people you do not trust. If you don't trust your partner, you will only resist each other and it will be impossible to practise Ki-awase. I am very lucky to be able to practise with people I trust and I thank everyone for that.

#89 Difference between deep breathing and "Kokyu-ho" - 深呼吸と合気呼吸法の違い

After a hard workout, we all try to catch our breath by taking deep breaths. We also take deep breaths to calm ourselves down in psychologically tense situations. Deep breathing is a way of calming the body and mind, but Aiki "Kokyu-ho" proposed by O-Sensei has a different concept. In this article I will explain the difference in concept scientifically.

Firstly, the way you breathe is closely related to your emotional and psychological state. When you feel fear or anxiety, your breathing is naturally fast and shallow. When you feel depressed or sad, you sigh more deeply. When you are angry, your breaths are short and strong, and each emotion has its own way of breathing.

Importantly, it has been scientifically proven that this relationship also works in reverse.

Breathing shallowly or sighing constantly has been shown to cause the brain to produce stress hormones such as cortisol, noradrenaline and adrenaline. Emotions such as anxiety, nervousness, impatience, pressure and even just frowning cause the production of stress hormones that weaken our physical and mental resistance. The human body is made up of chemical energy, and when stress hormones are released in the brain and pumped through the body by the bloodstream, they cause a contraction of that energy.

So how can we increase the levels of the good hormones (dopamine, serotonin, endorphin) that contribute to physical and mental health? Many studies have shown that the most effective way is not only to take deep breaths, but also to have a strong image of being one with the cosmic energy and expanding it. The medical evidence clearly shows an increase in oxygen absorption, dilation of the blood vessels, relaxation of the muscles, stabilisation of the heart rate and activation of the brain functions.

This fact is exactly in line with the concept of "Kokyu-ho" as taught by O-Sensei.

In other words, it is scientifically proven that breathing deeply while imagining the philosophy of O-Sensei's "Takemusu-aiki" will improve your physical and mental health.

Breathing with Aiki "Kokyu-ho" prevents emotional disturbances, reduces stress hormones, increases the production of good hormones and improves the body and mind's resistance. Breathing slowly and deeply while visualising the expansion of energy in your brain is the breathing technique of "Takemusu-aiki".

This is not the same as saying that you should take deep breaths as a treatment for breathlessness.

Deep breathing helps to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and relaxes all the muscles in the body. To do this, breathe in slowly for three seconds, hold for two seconds and then breathe out slowly for five seconds.

As science tells us, it is nonsense to think negatively about the possibility of becoming one with cosmic energy. Because it has been proven that having a strong image of it in your brain is beneficial for your health. In other words, it's like image training. A rich imagination may be the key to "Aiki".

Many thanks for reading my posts this year. I wish you all a very happy New Year.

#85 Aikiage – 合気上げ

Given the physics, we can all see that attempting a normal "Kiriage" motion with a grabbed hand is like playing a contest of strength. Therefore, no instructor will teach you to make a normal "Kiriage" movement in a grabbing technique. For beginners, we teach "Kiriage" for striking and "Aikiage" (Kokyu_ho) for grabbing. "Kiriage" movement is practised as part of the stretching exercises, so I don't think it needs to be explained.

Then, what is "Aikiage"?

It is a method used in "Suwari_waza_kokyu_ho", but since the term is confusing, I will call it "Aikiage" in this post. In simple terms, "Aikiage" is a training method (Tanren_ho) to break down the opponent's centre of gravity.

First of all, "Uke" needs to grip opponent's wrist strongly. If the grip is soft, only the arms are raised and the centre of gravity cannot be broken. This is why it is called the training method (Tanren_ho), not a technique (Waza). Don't be satisfied if your opponent's arm just goes up. There is no point in this training then.

For example, when you step off the stairs and lose your balance, you immediately grab the handrail tightly. The human body has conditional reflexes and cannot respond as softly as a shock absorber. "Aikiage" triggers this conditional reflex and causes the opponent's arm to stiffen.

In order to trigger the reflex, the following three things must be done at the same time.
1. Relax your arm and drop your elbow.
2. Quickly rotate your wrist halfway in the direction of the thumb turning inwards.
3. Lightly lift the hand blade with power on the little finger side.
The way you use the wrist spring is similar to the way you feel when you toss the ball in volleyball, I think.

When the Uke’s arm is stiffened by the conditional reflex, his grabbing hand cannot be released (cannot be moved). Then, you lift your elbow upwards and make the Uke standing on his toes. When the Uke stands on his toes, his centre of gravity swings back and forth, so you can use that moment to apply the technique. As you get used to it, your movements will become smaller and smaller, and just a quick lift of the opponent's shoulder will be enough.

In short, I think that "Aikiage" (Kokyu_ho) is a method of using conditional reflexes to set up the principle of leverage.

By the way, the hand blade should not be straight. It should be bent gently, as if you were tossing a volleyball.

#66 Discovery of the sixth sense - 第六感の発見

This year, scientific research reports that lead to the sixth sense of humanity have finally been published. The existence of geomagnetic ability was confirmed.

It is well known from the examination results of MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) that the human body has two magnetic fields. One is the brain and the other is the heart, both are organs that circulate a large amount of blood.

The formation of a magnetic field is not surprising because the human body contains a lot of minerals, proteins and magnetic irons, but it was thought that modern people had already lost the geomagnetic ability.

Many scientists have examined the things such as psychic powers, spiritual powers, and something powers..., but none of those has been identified as reproducible, or exceeded mathematical probabilities.

Simply put, those things use the illusion of brain, reflex action, and delusion. As you know that the Aikido technique also uses the illusion and reflex action of others. It depends on your thinking whether you call it "Ki" or not.

Anyway, I think that the geomagnetic ability is the first scientifically proven sixth sense.

Human's natural ability has been considered as five senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. If the research on effective utilization of geomagnetic ability and its amplification method is advanced in the future, our life will change dramatically.

For example, when an earthquake occurs, electromagnetic pulses occur under the ground. Animals with high geomagnetic abilities can detect the pulses, and therefore they take abnormal action before the earthquake travels. If research on human geomagnetism is advanced, it may be possible for people to be able to predict earthquakes and prevent damage.

Also when you get nervous, your heart will move faster and blood pressure will rise, then the magnetic field of the heart and brain will change. If you can sense the other person's emotions not only from the facial expression but also from the change in the magnetic field, Aikido will also change.

I hope this old but new ability won't be used as war tools.

Thanks for reading.

#64 What is "Ki no nagare"? - 気の流れとは何か?

In Aikido, the word “Ki no nagare", the flow of Ki, is often used, but the word is explained by mixing Asian philosophy. This is because O-sensei was Shinto believer, and Tohei-sensei respected the famous philosopher Mr. Nakamura. So the word is very vague and mysterious for those who are not familiar with Asian philosophy.

I think that most people are not convinced of "Ki no nagare", but are trying to feel uncertain energy.

So, what is "Ki no nagare"?

First of all, let's replace the word "Ki" with "consciousness" instead of making it an uncertain energy. In fact, the flow of consciousness is a common concept in modern sports such as boxing and wrestling. Even if you are not familiar with Asian philosophy, it will be easier to understand if you think of it as a flow of consciousness.

For example, weight training is more effective by being aware of the muscles you want to train. This is already proven in sports science and is common sense. Even when exercising, the body learns movement by consciously recognizing the muscles to move. Consciousness will run the whole body when things to be conscious are linked. This is proven in sports science in the same way as image training given by athletes.

The point is to accept the flow of consciousness and to memorize it in the brain. Once you became able to ride a bicycle, you can ride it for a lifetime. In the same way, copy the flow of consciousness from the cerebrum to the cerebellum.

And in most cases, sharing the image of the flow of consciousness with a partner is called "Ki no nagare". However, I think there is a misunderstanding about this. "Ki no nagare" is not as simple as image training. Because consciousness and emotion are produced by the brain.

In Asian philosophy, mind and Ki energy (life energy) are different elements. So I think the true meaning of the flow of Ki is different from the flow of consciousness, but I am still inexperienced and cannot understand it.

Does your practice distinguish between the flow of Ki and the flow of consciousness? It is very interesting to me.

#36 Method of Meditation 瞑想の方法

This time, I would like to introduce a method of meditation that I repeated many times during my hospitalization.

When mosquitoes are flying in the room, you cannot concentrate on study or work because the sound of mosquitoes is a weigh on your mind. Put it in another way, it is a situation that you concentrate on the sound of mosquitoes so that you cannot do anything else.

Although it is difficult to concentrate on things that are not interesting, it is easy to concentrate on the things that you are interested or very concerned. This is the method using human nature like that.

First, close your eyes and count the sounds that you can hear. Transfer consciousness to audible sound such as clock sound, wind sound, heart sound. Choose the most interesting sound among them. As you concentrate just on the sound, other sounds will gradually get smaller and disappear.

If you are able to reduce the sound one by one and concentrate until the last sound disappears, negative emotions such as uneasiness and fear will be separated from your mind.

Because we are human beings, the mind sometimes become weak. I hope that the method helps in such a time.

Thank you for reading.

#30 Placebo Effect 偽薬効果

If you give an inactive placebo like sugar by saying that this is a good medicine to a sick person, it sometimes turns effective. This is called the placebo effect. It is said that if the brain believes "this is a good medicine", the body will work correspondingly.

This proves that the brain is constantly exchanging information with the body and how the brain behaviour will change the body. It is also said that among people who are sick or injured, the time of complete recovery is quite different between those who believe they will recover and those who are suffering from anxiety and fear.

The important thing is to believe a positive result and keep on making efforts for that. Actually, pharmacological effects of self-suggestion have not been confirmed. However, it is well known that chemical substances produced in the brain depend on thinking.

If you have a positive emotion, chemicals that cause analgesic and happiness such as endorphin, serotonin, oxytocin, dopamine are secreted from the brain. Conversely, if you have a negative emotion, stress hormone such as cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline will be secreted from the brain and the immune function will be lowering.

In summary,
1. By having positive thinking, good chemical reactions occur in the brain, suppress stress hormone and cause good changes in the body.

2. It is important to believe 100% of the ideal result and make efforts.

3. By changing consciously how to work the brain, it is possible to have a good effect on the mind and body.

The placebo effect proves a strong connection between the brain and the body. "Takemusu Aikido" does not play a game and does not allow you to have any offensive feelings to others. I think that attraction of "Takemusu Aikido" is that aims at polishing your intelligence rather than martial power.

Thank you very much for your encouragement after returning to practice. I am looking forward to practice while thanking for being alive today.

#27 How to form unconscious behaviour 無意識下の動作

An action to ride a bicycle is not the act that a human being can do by nature. After practicing many times, we become able to ride a bicycle. Conversely, once you became able to get on, you can ride a bicycle for the rest of your life. According to Sport Science, it is because a cerebellum memorized the method of riding a bicycle.

Although the cerebellum is smaller than the cerebrum, the cerebellum has more nerve cells. The nerve cells of the cerebrum are approximately 14 billion, but nerve cells of cerebellum are approximately 100 billion.

Learning something through physical experience is that the cerebellum memorizes the experience. To say in other words, the cerebrum takes charge of consciousness, and the cerebellum takes charge of unconsciousness.

Because the cerebrum produces a conclusion after thinking (consciousness), response time is slow (0.7 ~ 1 sec). The cerebellum gets a conclusion by memory (unconsciousness). Therefore, response time becomes quick (0.15 ~ 0.3 sec).

When experience is copied from the cerebrum to cerebellum, a density of memory varies depending on a way of the experience. If you worked hard and overcame fears, the density of memory becomes stronger. If you work roughly, the thing would not be copied to the cerebellum properly.

The act of memorizing what you have experienced with the body is the act of burning memory strongly to the cerebellum. This is why concentration power is required. Although there is efficiency in the method, there is no shortcut.

#13 Refractory Period 神経細胞の不応期

When the brain catches two recognitions, the prefrontal area is panicked and a nerve system is incapable of responding to stimulation. This conflict requires extra processing time (reaction time) for the brain to resolve, and the movement of the body stops suddenly when it really happens.

This reaction of the brain is called “refractory period”.

Refractory period in brain is a period during which a nerve or muscle is incapable of responding to stimulation, especially immediately following a previous stimulation.

In the martial arts, there are a lot of techniques using the refractory period. As soon as the opponent takes an action of attack, you make a reaction which is different from the prediction of the opponent. Your reaction will stop the movement of the opponent, and you will be able to take next move before the opponent responds.

In another example, if the predicted resistance disappears suddenly, the brain cannot respond immediately. You feel the illusion as if the arm of the opponent you grabbed suddenly became a sponge.

If you practice by solely relying on the feelings, sometimes you are unable to find the way how to make progress. In such cases, training with knowledge will help you.

#06 Reticular Activating System in the brain 網様体賦活系の活性化

Have you ever experienced getting noticed of the same model cars when you bought a new car? This is because the reticular activating system (so-called RAS) is working in the brain. RAS can be activated by consciousness of everything.

RAS works to select and capture only necessary information for you. It protects the brain against loading unnecessary information. In other words, only things that are interesting come into the eyes and ears.

If you think about happy things or look for positive things, RAS finds positive things one by one. If you are consciously appreciating it, you will be filled with lots of thanks. On the contrary, RAS finds only negative things when you hate or look down on others. If you consider yourself unhappy, you will be surrounded by unfortunate things. It is not a religious thing, but the work of brain is doing that kind of thing all the time.

The philosophy of "Takemusu-aiki" can re-activate RAS in a good way. The practice method of Takemusu Aikido has no competition and no enemy. It leads to seeking a beautiful way of life as a human being.

Of course, because we are human beings, there are times when we feel down or get lost, sometimes we suffer. Still, we want to become a human being who can turn forward and appreciate today. I think that is the strength of real human beings.

The reason why we love and practice Aikido is not to fight with someone but to become a human with a strong will, I suppose. Aikido helps you to activate RAS in a good way.
