#08 Simplify Preliminary Movement - 予備動作を簡素化する

Before you jump, you need to sink a body in opposite direction. Without bending the knees and using the reaction of the upper body, you cannot jump. We are making preliminary movement casually.

Conversely if you watch an opponent’s preliminary movement carefully, you are able to predict how the opponent moves next. In fact, we naturally watch movement of the whole body of the opponent and sense how the opponent moves next.

That is to say, if you make the movement as simple as possible, the opponent won’t know how you move next.

For example, if you don't notice the moment the opponent swings down his sword, you would be cut before noticing.

For this reason, you need to simplify preliminary movement and eliminate waste of action.

In addition, people often fall into a habit and make unnecessary movement. Once a bad habit is formed, it is hard to get rid of it. Everyone has to be careful about this point enough during training.

#07 Boundary of Beautiful Aikido and Ugly Aikido - 美しい合気道と醜い合気道の境界線

When you participate in demonstration, most of you want your friends to become “Uke” on your demonstration. In order to perform well, everyone naturally knows that a trust relationship with “Uke” is the most important factor in Aikido.

To develop the trust relationship with training partners, I believe that we need to realize the boundary between attack and harmony. We should find the boundary between two things and accept it firstly.

When you feel losing balance or struggling to recover position, you must take “Ukemi” without hesitation. That is the boundary and you must accept it. “Ukemi” is the falling techniques to avoid injury and you must not refuse to do so.

If “Uke” offers stiff resistance and stays like a stone statue on the mats, pat on the back of his head lightly. If “Tori” (thrower) tries to throw you by force and ignores your movement, renounce being his "Uke". It is important to practice with respect, it should not be hostility.

Feel the boundary, accept it, and take Ukemi techniques. Then you are ready to perform the beautiful Aikido, I suppose.

#06 Reticular Activating System in the brain 網様体賦活系の活性化

Have you ever experienced getting noticed of the same model cars when you bought a new car? This is because the reticular activating system (so-called RAS) is working in the brain. RAS can be activated by consciousness of everything.

RAS works to select and capture only necessary information for you. It protects the brain against loading unnecessary information. In other words, only things that are interesting come into the eyes and ears.

If you think about happy things or look for positive things, RAS finds positive things one by one. If you are consciously appreciating it, you will be filled with lots of thanks. On the contrary, RAS finds only negative things when you hate or look down on others. If you consider yourself unhappy, you will be surrounded by unfortunate things. It is not a religious thing, but the work of brain is doing that kind of thing all the time.

The philosophy of "Takemusu-aiki" can re-activate RAS in a good way. The practice method of Takemusu Aikido has no competition and no enemy. It leads to seeking a beautiful way of life as a human being.

Of course, because we are human beings, there are times when we feel down or get lost, sometimes we suffer. Still, we want to become a human being who can turn forward and appreciate today. I think that is the strength of real human beings.

The reason why we love and practice Aikido is not to fight with someone but to become a human with a strong will, I suppose. Aikido helps you to activate RAS in a good way.

#05 “Sticky Hand” and “Pinky Rule” - 吸い付く握り方と手刀の使い方

< Sticky Hand >
Don't grasp a hand of an opponent tightly. Attach your hand to hang it on the wrist of the opponent, and turn the wrist slightly so that the opponent's palm faces upward.

Generally speaking, people can be well balanced when the little finger side is facing downward. However, when the palm faces upward, people begin to feel psychological uneasiness.

While the palm of the opponent faces upward, you add another movement which is leading the hand downward. These actions give the illusion that falling down from the face.

Therefore the opponent is unable to take the hand off from your hand. That’s why it is called “Sticky Hand”.

Control height with a waist without straining the arm muscles, and break the balance of the opponent while sensing a direction of movement of the opponent.

< Pinky Rule >
Assume the little finger side is the blade edge of the sword. By facing the little finger side to the cutting direction, the body balance becomes stabilized.

In other words, the body balance of the opponent becomes unstable by turning the little finger side of the opponent to inside.

When you lead the movement of the opponent, you need to control the opponent's wrist and prevent collision with the little finger side.

The above is the basic concept of "Sticky hand" and "Pinkey rule".

#04 Three things we can begin immediately to become a good "Uke" - 良い受けになるために今直ぐできる3つのこと

There is a certain fact that everyone becomes aware of it after training Aikido for years. The fact is that we can eventually understand movement of "Nage" (thrower) by having a proper understanding of movement of "Uke". In order to become a good "Nage", we must become a good "Uke" firstly.

My techniques remain terrible, so I am working on the following basic action as the first one step.

1. Don’t become a statue:
There are people who become like a stone statue and fix the body. As soon as the first attack fails, "Uke" must turn the body and place the stance face to face. You must prevent attacks from behind.

2. Pivot on the foot which stepped:
If "Nage" steps into the rear (Ura), "Uke" must pivot on the foot which stepped. Don't be separated from "Nage" by making an unnecessary step. In addition, don't bend a waist like a prawn.

3. Don't fall down wilfully:
Always give chase to "Nage", and let's stand up even if tired. Don't fall down wilfully until balance is broken by "Nage".

The skill of the Aikido is not the thing which assumed one-on-one play like boxing and wrestling. In the battlefield, stop means death. Samurai should swing a heavy sword around while running around among many enemies in the battlefield.

Strongly step, turn a body quickly and run after an enemy. Perhaps, you can understand the movement of "Uke" better if you imagine the movement in such a battlefield.

#03 Concept of Ki energy that excluded religious interpretation - 宗教や思想にとらわれない気エネルギーの概念

I think everyone has experienced the once, I have had difficulty in explaining an uncertain "Ki" thing when I explained Aikido to others. Today, many people receive higher education. If you try to explain it with religious theories or system of thought, people remain in doubt. Therefore, I would like to introduce my way how I illustrate "Ki" energy by acceptable viewpoint without depending on religion and the thought.

Firstly, brain is an organ to memorize basically. Therefore your intuition is judged by your memory, and you understand only what you experienced. And your brain memorizes your speech, behaviour and thought. Specifically if you voice out, or do something with strong-willed, it is memorized strongly in the brain. Also personality, tastes, feelings and mind are formed by the way of working of the brain.

In recent years the study of activation of the brain function is one of the popular researches in the life science field. The merit to let brain activate without using a drug is very big. It is said that the sense organs usually use only ability of 20 to 40%. Human body has a limitation in the information-processing speed of the brain. If the processing speed rises, you will be able to see the thing which was cut off to reduce the load in brain. You will be able to notice a change of slight movement that you were unable to take in. In addition, you will get a sharp judgment by increasing a feeling of freedom.

According to the researchers who investigated bloodstream condition and endocrine gland in the brain, it is confirmed that the brain activates by memorizing (strongly believing) the thought that a great force acts on oneself. In other words, it is scientifically confirmed that you sense a pleasant and refreshing feeling by having awareness of expansion of the energy.

If the findings of the scientist are right, denying existence of "Ki" energy becomes nonsense. We have no reason not to do so if we are able to activate the brain by letting the brain strongly memorize the concept of "Ki" energy.

In brief, a gift given by the activation of the brain may become what's called "Ki", I suppose.

#01 Meaning of "武産合気" (Takemusu-Aiki)

[ Meaning of "武産合気" (Takemusu-aiki) ]

In the Aikido dojos, you often see the Japanese calligraphy "武産合気" on the wall. It reads "Takemusu-aiki". It's the proverb of O-sensei (the founder of Aikido) and there is the principle of his Aikido behind it. Because of that, his Aikido is often called "Takemusu Aikido".

For the thought of the Shintoism (Japanese religion), meaning of "Takemusu" is the power of creating the world, and meaning of "Aiki" is to unite into one.

According to the book of "Takemusu-aiki" written from O-sensei's dictation, meaning of his proverb is that all the energy (of Aikido) is born in harmony with principle of nature.

Then what is the training style to embody "Takemusu Aikido"?

In a newspaper published in April 1959, O-sensei clearly declared that Daitoryu Aiki-Jujutu and his "Takemusu Aikido" were totally different.

The ancient Japanese martial arts including the Aiki-Jujutsu are military martial arts. Their techniques only aim to kill and eliminate an enemy efficiently. "Takemusu Aikido" is the modern martial arts that O-sensei founded on the premise that you make a break away from a thought of killing an enemy.

It is intended to teach beautiful way of life rather than mere martial arts. That's why the reverse joint lock and stomping techniques were excluded in "Takemusu Aikido" from a beginning by O-sensei.

"Takemusu-aiki" is also a motto of the our dojo, Shinryukan NZ. Takase-sensei sometimes says "Let's do Aikido" after having observed our training. The reason why he said so would be that we showed wicked thoughts and tried to throw opponents by force, I suppose.

I hope that all instructors and members of Shinryukan explore ideal training style that met the dojo's motto together.
